I called this newsletter Citizen of Everywhere because that’s who I am.
I don’t see myself as wedded to a country, less still an island. I started out as a young reporter in East Berlin, where I was fortunate to see the Wall come down. Then I went straight to Moscow to witness the collapse of Soviet Communism. That, as we know, wasn’t the end of history.
And so after Brexit, I decided to relocate, most if not all of the time, to my new Heimat, from where I wrote ‘Why the Germans Do it Better’ and ‘In Search of Berlin’, while continuing do regular journalism for the likes of the Guardian, Foreign Policy, politico, The New World, and programmes for the BBC.
What’s wonderful, as you all know, about Substack is that you can provide your own unfiltered (and hopefully sensible) voice, and, most of all, read others’.
Over the past three years, I’ve been travelling the world in search of best practice, which is where ‘Braver New World’ comes in. It’ll be published in April (you can pre-order here). I’ve been incredibly gratified by the early endorsements. I hope it’ll make some waves and be a practical antidote to our current dystopia.
Please subscribe to my Substack… and buy the book!
