I totally agree: the self-flagellation of this country - media, commentators, friends - sometimes leaves me speechless. The other Europeans - with all the antipathy they may feel - have instead learnt the lesson of expediency: Germany is condemned to succeed, for its own sake and for that of the continent.

For a German child of WW2, long living in the US, it's gratifying to hear good words about Germany and that the country is taking strong initiatives to help Europe and themselves.

From the mid 1890's until recently Germans were the majority of US immigrants, but today if you speak with a German accent people are intrigued, most are polite, but some still think of the Nazis. I have heard students from Germany wonder why they invariably are asked about Hitler who for them is the distant past. But perhaps Germans still are haunted by that past as well? I myself still feel ashamed of being German.
