Unfortunately the value base betrayed by Mandelson's gleeful statement that it was fine to be 'filthy rich' was a New Labour emblem

While it was qualified by as long as taxes were paid, it was not by what means nor with reference to wider societal inequalities.

A motif practised by Tony Blair himself, who thought himself hard done by because he missed out of the London housing boom by dint of becoming prime minister and sneered at the fact that one of Harold Wilson's sons was 'only a schoolteacher', it proved to one of the enduring undermining weaknesses of its political methodology and message.

Political values both in their projection and practice matter.
